âI HEARD ABOUT your comradeâs difficulty in New York,â Bogdan Britnev said, frowning at the speakerphone in front of him. âMy friends also have had some...difficulties.â
âCoincidence, you think?â his caller asked.
âItâs always possible,â Britnev allowed. âBut likely? I am skeptical.â
âAs I am,â Pavlo Voloshyn replied.
âThe problem with such things isââ
âDistance,â Voloshyn finished for him.
âExactly. I have other people in the neighborhood who could investigate, perhaps, but do I risk them? Is it easier and wiser just to wait and see what happens next?â
âThatâs why Iâm calling.â
âAh.â Now they were getting to the crux of it.
âI have received a message from Manhattan. One of Melnykâs people. Did you ever meet Stepan?â
âI never had the pleasure,â Britnev said.
âI wouldnât go that far, but he was competentâor so I thought.â
âThe message?â Britnev prodded him.
âFrom one of the survivors.â
âNaturally.â How could dead men make a trans-Atlantic call?
âHe thought one man, or possibly a small group, might have been responsible for what befell my friends, and yours.â
Britnev considered that. âOfficial?â he inquired.
âThere was no indication of it. No arrests until the bodies started falling. Only now are members of the FBI beginning to investigate.â
âA covert agency, perhaps?â Britnev suggested.
âIf it had happened here,â Voloshyn said, âI might suspect the police. Americans, for the most part, only behave that way in other countries, I believe.â
âBut now, you think...?â
âIâm not sure. If there was a motive...â
âSomething like the incident in Washington, perhaps?â
âThat was not my affair!â
âOf course. I understand.â Britnev smiled at the speakerphone. âBut it could easily be misinterpreted.â
âIn which case, why attack your interests, as well?â Voloshyn asked.
And that was troubling. It suggested knowledge no one should possess. âI have no answer,â Britnev finally admitted.
âThen, I think we both should be on guard.â
âHere? In Kiev?â
âUntil we know there is no danger from outside,â Voloshyn said.
Stating the obvious, Britnev replied, âI am always on guard.â
âBut more than normal, eh? Until this passes, or we manage to explain it.â
Britnev tried to see the angles, figure out how Voloshynâs alarmism could injure him, but saw nothing. âThereâs never any harm in being cautious,â he agreed.
âAnd we should stay in touch.â
âAs usual, comrade.â
âGood day, then.â
âAnd to you.â
Britnev switched off the speakerphone and rocked back in his chair, scowled at the vaulted ceiling of his office for a while, and then reached out to make the first of several urgent calls.
